How to identify wasps

There are many different types of wasps and ways they nest. Wasps share a common appearance trait of two wings and a defined upper and lower section. They may come in a wide range of colors with yellow and black being the most common. You may also see, black, red, green, or brown wasps. These pests can often be found nesting in eaves, soffits, gutters, and attics. You will typically see them around eating areas, patios, pools, gardens, landscaping, playgrounds, and outdoor trash cans. They are attracted to flowers and plants and especially food, hence the trash cans or picnic tables.

Don’t get stung!

Wasps will typically build their nests out of wood particles, dirt, and mud using their saliva to create a paper-like pulp. Wasp nests are typically cone-shaped in nature but may also have different appearances. When it comes to removing or treating wasp nests, it is best to leave this to the experts or you risk getting stung. When wasps feel threatened, they go into defensive mode. Wasps have the capability of stinging multiple times and trust us, you do not want to find that out the hard way. Especially if you have allergies, these attacks could be dangerous or even fatal.

Bee Control

As the weather gets nicer outside, we tend to spend more time outdoors. One of the nice things about the colder months is that many of the pests hibernate. Not the case in the Spring and Summer. The pests, especially bees, come out to start their pollination, production (honey bees), and disruption of our outdoor enjoyment. If you are looking to spend this Summer pest-free, then JDA Pest Control is the answer. We have dealt with many varieties of bees and are able to quickly identify and create a treatment plan that can help keep you, your family, and your guests safe from these pests.

Types of Bees in Pennsylvania

Quite a few of us are scared of bees no matter what the type of bee is. It’s easier to grab some bee spray or run and hide. This however is not a good way to treat the problem. Depending on the type of nesting a particular bee does can determine how to best treat them.

Here are some of the most common types of bees we find in the Pennsylvania area:

  • Yellow Jackets – Commonly black and yellow in color with a black head area and a black and yellow lower area. These stinging bees (females only) can be a menace. Similar to the wasps these preditors typically move side to side and live in nests.
  • Carpenter Bees – Carpenter bees are like bumblebees in appearance but have shiny, black, hairless abdomens. They like to nest in wood structures. Male carpenter bees do not have a stinger, females do, but do not sting unless provoked.
  • Hornets – They have a relatively large head and rounded segment of the abdomen just behind the waist. They can nest in trees, shrubs, and even in the ground.
  • Wasps – Wasps share a common appearance trait of two wings and a defined upper and lower section. They may come in a wide range of colors with yellow and black being the most common.
  • Honey Bees – Typically yellow and black in color and most known for the honey they produce from their nests. We do not remove or exterminate honey bees but can provide you with recommendations for those who will.

DIY Bee Removal Vs Professional Bee Removal

As you know, many home improvement stores have many options available when it comes to bee extermination. While some of these sprays may be effective as short-term solutions, they are temporary at best. Bees will often move to a different area of your home and continue to pester you and your property until treated properly by a professional. JDA Pest Control will provide you with an effective and affordable treatment plan to create the best course of action for treating your bee problems.
